When I first saw the ad in the newspaper for a Merry Maids franchise for sale I was in a retail management position. Retail sales and management was really all I had ever done, but I was looking for a new challenge (as if having a one-year-old son and being 40 years old wasn't enough of a challenge already!) After researching ServiceMaster, talking to Terry Hould in the Home Office and talking to several other Merry Maids owners in Canada I realized that there were some very good reasons for me to purchase a franchise.
- A Monday to Friday daytime business would allow me to have more time with my son at home.
- With how successful a Merry Maids franchise is likely to be, I would be able to reduce my hours as my son got older (and I got older) and be there for him before & after school.
- Merry Maids gives an enormous amount of training and support to franchise owners to help them succeed, through regional meetings, training manuals and help desk people.
The best part of being a Franchise owner with Merry Maids is being a part of the big "family" of Merry Maids. When I first started up, 2 B.C. owners were asked to be my "buddies" and help me when I had questions. I also had Donna, the "franchise support person" only a phone call away.
That was 12 years ago, and in the past few years I have been able to reciprocate the help from my "buddies" by giving advice to some new franchise owners. It is a great feeling when you are able to mentor others.

My entire working career has been in the automotive industry, starting as a parts truck driver/shipper in a car dealership and progressing through to having management jobs in both the service and parts departments and eventually owning my own franchised car repair shop. The customer service knowledge gained over the years has been a great asset to me in the Merry Maids franchise. Just over 5 years ago I decided that I needed a new challenge and was looking for an opportunity to start a new career. I was familiar with the Merry Maids franchise because a few years before they were awarded the Canadian Franchisor of the year award. At the time I was applying for the franchise Merry Maids had been in business for about 25 years and was the largest maid service in the world. I believe in the franchise concept because of the ongoing support, training and a proven business model.
There are many good parts about a Merry Maids franchise but the best would be the support franchisees receive. This would include the initial training, the inventory and supply system, head office support and the support from other franchisees in the network. Owning a Merry Maids Franchise has made me far more financially secure.
My first five years as a Merry Maids franchisee has been very rewarding to me personally and as a company. We have enjoyed a lot of success and won many awards including Rookie of The Year and 100 Grand Growth awards in 2006, Sales Growth Leader for Canada and 100 Grand Award in 2007, and Western Region Percentage Growth Leader in 2009 and 5 Circle Awards for sales levels.

We first came across the opportunity to purchase a Merry Maids franchise in early 2007. We were looking for a local business opportunity where we could leverage our business skills while striking the work-life balance that we were seeking for our young family. We had both spent over 10 years with Fortune 500 companies and during that time, had developed experience in customer service, people management and sales & marketing. We felt confident that our experience would bring a balanced skill set to the right opportunity. The only thing left to do was to find that opportunity.
We briefly explored the possibility of starting a business from scratch, but were drawn to the advantages of purchasing a franchise with a proven system. We discovered that a Merry Maids franchise was available in our area. While researching Merry Maids and its relationship with the ServiceMaster Group of companies, we discovered not only a potential fit with our professional backgrounds, but a fit with our beliefs about the fundamental principles that make a company successful. After speaking and meeting with several people at the head office, visiting with a neighbouring franchise, and of course soliciting the advice of local professionals, we made the decision to purchase a Merry Maids franchise and begin the journey of business ownership.
On August 1st, 2010, we will celebrate the 3rd anniversary of our Merry Maids business in Moncton, New Brunswick. Owning our own business has been by far the most challenging and most rewarding professional experience of our lives. A large part of our success is a result of the ongoing support we receive from other franchise owners, the head office and other businesses within the ServiceMaster Family of companies. There is a true sense of cooperation within the group; a belief that when individual franchises succeed, everyone succeeds. We look forward to the continued growth of our Merry Maids business, and our relationship with ServiceMaster Canada.

Owning any small business is not for the faint of heart. It requires dedication, perseverance and hard work.
In saying that there is also great joy and pride at seeing something you have worked very hard at come to fruition. Having a small business is like raising a child. You have lots of ups and downs, a lot more ups than downs and a lot of pride and joy.
Before I started working at Merry Maids I worked for WSIB as a Quality Control Analyst. After 10 years of travelling to Toronto every day I decided to be a stay at home mom and raise my two daughters. When my eldest went into high school and my youngest finished kindergarten my youngest daughter Alex said "Mommy you need a job?. At that time my sister was purchasing a Merry Maids franchise and I went to work for her. I started out working in the office doing all of the accounting. From there I ended up buying the franchise from her.
I have done every job at Merry Maids including cleaning, for without having cleaned you don't know how to properly sell the business, it also gives you a good understanding as to what your staff go through on a day to day basis.
In owning a Merry Maids I was able to make my schedule to adapt to my children's schedule, it provided me with an income; it allowed me to be my own boss and the creator of my own destiny. It also gave me great personal satisfaction.
I didn't have the opportunity to continue my education with university or college, I always knew I was good at being a mother , but my girls were in school and I need more for myself. I needed to prove to myself that I could be successful outside the home. Merry Maids gave me that opportunity, and I have never looked back. Last year I purchased a second Merry Maids Franchise to add to my family business.
My girls were both raised in the business and my eldest daughter bought her own Merry Maids Franchise last June. She has turned the franchise around and is growing the franchise at a rate of 60% over last year's revenue.
It is exciting having your daughters work with you in the business and then go on to have their own Merry Maids Franchise.
This speaks volumes about the ServiceMaster family and in particular Merry Maids of Canada. Our success is in part due to the fact that we purchase a product that was tried and true. The support and encouragement we have received from Merry Maids is first rate, one of the nicest parts of being a franchise owner is that your voice is heard. The training and informational seminars are all part of being a successful franchise owner. Merry Maids of Canada provides you with the demographics, marketing material and all the information to make your franchise a success. Now all you need is hard work.
